Summary/Abstract: This paper concerns the meaning of human suffering in the context of participation in the redemptive suffering of Jesus Christ. John Paul II writes about this meaning of suffering in his Apostolic Letter Salvifici doloris. The redemptive meaning of suffering does not change the fact that it is evil and must be opposed. Suffering, however, should be seen in the context of future glory and must be used for the Kingdom of God. Human sufferings complete the sufferings of Christ. In suffering, the man is called to transcend himself. The suffering of others should trigger love and willingness to provide help in the man.
