Summary/Abstract: This essay interprets the collection ”Bašta slezove boje” by Branko Ćopić from the perspective of the phenomenon of melancholy, and the ultimate meaning of a letter addressed to a dear friend. Disputing the judgement of Branko Ćopić as a writer exclusively engaged by the communist authorities, the author of this essay searches for the metaphysical connotations of the Secret, the figure of the Other, and of Eden. The storytelling agenda in the collections of B. Ćopić posits not only a folkloristic imagination and a traditionally realistic orientation to the outside world, but it places the story into the realm of modern subjectivity. The melancholic and humoristic sensibility of B. Ćopić questions, unobtrusively, the key problems in the modern man’s self-understanding, his intimate existential crisis and socially-political manipulation.
