Summary/Abstract: This article explores the need for new paradigms to describe, and be used as guiding models for, the field of civil-military relations. The traditional theoretical frameworks, created in the West decades ago, have to be fine-tuned on the basis of both the reality of new regional contexts (such as Central and Eastern Europe) and the imperatives of the post-Cold War (especially post-9/11) international threat environment. While notable alternatives have been proposed in the West, particularly after the demise of the Soviet Union and the emergence of qualitatively different international security challenges, Central and Eastern Europe is yet to contribute to this emerging debate.
