Geopolitical Coordinates of the Enlarged Middle East

Summary/Abstract: Democracy-building in the Wider Middle East is an older concern in major parts of the area than the post 9/11 survey of political messages would suggest, as it is deeply linked to the quest for modernization. NATO and EU initiatives that were launched to deal with the topic are briefly examined, as well as their impact on the supposed beneficiaries. The importance of the “regional ownership” of the process is hardly arguable; yet, the answer to the basic question about the identity of the local allies seems to be one of the keys to the successful outcome of the project.
