Summary/Abstract: A major NATO lead operation is currently underway in Afghanistan. If successful, this can mean the central government backed by international forces gains full control of the territory. Helmand province is the last region where the Taliban still maintain control. The article argues military victory is only the first step towards a stable and orderly society. The political and historical traditions of the country shows any attempt to build strong political centres are notably difficult. The ultimate goal of the intervention will only be attained if Afghan institutions and groups reach a stable agreement on what political community means, entails and offers to all of its members.
