Summary/Abstract: American anthropologist and linguist Dell Hymes (1927–2009) significantly influenced both linguistics and anthropology. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the contribution of Hymes to linguistics, anthropology, sociolinguistics, ethnography and other scholarly fields in which his theoretical work and empirical surveys appeared. A focus has been put on what he termed ethnography of communication. The paper investigates and singles out importance that ethnography of communication has had for present linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics.
