Summary/Abstract: The paper is focused on the debate related to which old and new approaches (as well as theoretical mainstreams) are more appropriate to use nowadays in the studies regarding the international relations. In the midst of that debate there is the issue of the realism – as the main paradigm in international relations and the newest theoretical trend related to realism: the neo-classical realism. This paper is focused on a critical approach towards the basic assumptions of the neo-classical realism and the major argument is that this theoretical trend in international relations is always creating new hypotheses in order to try to provide explanations for those issues and phenomenon that are not confirming the basic principles of realism. Thus, the neo-classical realism is in real danger to become a degenerate theoretical approach for the study of international relations. The cooperation tendencies between states, the establishment of political identities, the asymmetrical conflicts, as well as the creation of a new world economy – all those elements should be taken into account in order to create appropriate instruments for analysis of the international relations.
