Summary/Abstract: Lace-making tradition in the town of Pag is centuries old, and has persisted, in various contexts, to this very day. This paper examines the dynamics of change of lace production, exchange and consumption from 1900 to the present day, including its role in gender roles and relations. The findings suggest that the persistence of lace-making tradition into this century is not a reflection of a static lifestyle in this rural town situated on an isolated island. On the contrary, lace-making in Pag has been a vehicle for various social groups to both adjust and respond to multivalent changes occurring during this century, a century which can be characterized as the most turbulent one in the town’s long history.
