Summary/Abstract: Landmarks for a Theory of Personality. Starting form the idea that society is a structure of personalities, that its way of existence and raison d’ etre is the personalization of individuals, this study emphasizes the distiction as well as the logical and historical relationship between the personality of the average individual, which is the basis of the entire personalization of society, on the one hand, and the personality of the individual reaching notoriety on the other. At the same time, this is an attempt to present the significance of positive and negative personalities in the history of mankind, with reference to Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin and Jesus Christ seen as a real or mystical person. Considering Nietzsche and especially Weber’s contributions in this area, the author discusses the paradox of personality formation in the European civilization. The necessity of going beyond various antithetical positions, present in Mircea Eliade’s view on the dialectical relationship between the sacred and profane aspects of human condition, essential for personality development is also discussed. The autor proposes a definition of personality within the framework of an utonomous area of research: the theory of personality.
