Summary/Abstract: This article, part of a larger work, attempts to trace the formation of a distinct discourse on the Balkans in the course of several centuries. The notion "Balkanism" is juxtaposed to Said's category "Orientalism" and is treated not as a simple sub-species of Orientalism, but as an independent category with its own specific links to the dominant European discourses.
