Summary/Abstract: This article presents two different theoretical perspectives from the position of which the relation between the EU process of enlargement eastwards and the security issue could be analyzed. From a constructivist perspective, security as an act of speech becomes the main rationale that lies behind the EU enlargement process eastwards. The second part of the article defines security as the absence of war. There is an empirical evidence that liberal democracies do not fight wars among them”, however there is also an empirical evidence that since the emergence of the European Union, there has been no international major conflict among member states. Starting from this point, this section represents an attempt of trying to see what are the possible explanations for the absence of a major international conflict among the member states. Is this due to the fact that member states are liberal democracies or it is due to the European Union as a collective arrangement?
