Summary/Abstract: Turkish recent foreign policy has generated numerous debates and concerns regarding the direction towards which it is heading, the transatlantic community being worried about Ankara’s interest in reviving cooperation initiatives, which do not necessarily converge with those of the Euro-Atlantic partners. The objective of European integration – irrespective of how impossible or distant it may seem, especially from the perspective of European states – remains firmly grounded in the political agenda of the Turkish government. Ankara’s relations with neighbouring countries are primarily based on regional economic and potentially political convergency principles, and not necessarily on the idea of Muslim unity. If we are to assess the situation beyond the conviction expressed by the Turkish government in its own capacity to contribute to solving as many problems of the region as possible, it remains to be seen how lasting and solid the alliances which Ankara seeks to build up in the region really are, and whether their creation is likely to undermine the objectives of Western countries.
