Summary/Abstract: Congressman Frank Kowalski first introduces the prayer he commissioned from Thomas Merton to be read at a joint session of Congress in Holy Week 1962. According to him, the prayer expresses “the anguish of man groping to control the monstrous weapons he has devised for the annihilation of civilian populations and the sorrow of man for the incalculable injury we and our adversaries inflict on all men and on their children for generations to come”.
