Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this Paper is to take a fresh look at gender mainstreaming in national armed forces and how such reforms can pave the way for more effective and accountable international operations. In the context of interventions in conflict situations and stability operations, understanding gender roles facilitates the promotion of human security. The Paper stresses the importance of the UN women, peace and security resolutions which devote particular attention to how states prepare their personnel for deployment to peace and stability operations. Lessons learned by countries like Romania underscore that gender mainstreaming is a cornerstone of defense transformation.
