Summary/Abstract: The author offers a threefold answer to the question of the origin and application of information. First, the origin of Information is traced to the essence of scientific enquiry; second, Krippendorff’s definition of information is analyzed and criticised; third, the author points to the antinomy of the metaeconomic and metasocial definition of information and of the information society. In the author's view, the analysis of the information theory, and particularly Krippendorff’s version of the theory of the information society, reveals an intention to project history as a futurological estimate, thus clearly betraying its pretensions to wield social and political power. This, in turn, exposes the information theory as an elitist and technocratic theory without historical precedent.
