Summary/Abstract: Contemporary practical philosophy is based on the recognition of the existing plurality of interests and forms of life, as well as on constant attempts at designs that would ensure the compability or mediation of that pluralism. Modem political philosophers do not invoke divine or secular authoritarian principles of legitimity as these no longer apply to modern communities, but rather the transparent articulation of interests into reasons, the confrontation of reasons, and rational decision-making on the basis thereof. This way of reasoning separates modern authors from those representing distant and not so distant traditions. The modern way of reasoning is exemplified by the theories of Feyerabend and Wellmer.
