Summary/Abstract: The networked society at the turn of the millennium has completely redefined the notion of space and time and has opened the door to the rise of a new communication paradigm that will soon dominate the world. And the concepts that defined the media and journalism of the twentieth century will soon disappear, the media paradigm we know today will end. The communication model, sender - message – recipient, is no longer valid, and the virtual space has completely lifted the boundaries of the physical and opened endless possibilities for horizontal communication with each and every one. The emergence of Facebook in 2004, then of YouTube in 2005 and Twitter in 2006, announced the arrival of this new communication paradigm that was finally installed by smartphones. When speaking about the Internet, new, digital media and their forms of communication and information sharing, it is often articulated today as a talk of extremes, progress, connectivity and openness, or of danger, alienation and surveillance. It is understood that there is an exclusive influence of media and technology on man and society, in the way that two kinds of faces are stereotypically attributed to the media: one advanced and the other backward, one that affects human being in order to save him and the other in order to destroy him. The critics of social media speak about the destructive role of digital technologies today and claim that Facebook and related social networks will destroy democracy and bring the world to the era of autocracy. The complete openness of virtual reality and the possibility of direct communication with supporters enabled radical groups to propagate ideas for which it would have been very difficult to access the traditional media in time before the internet and in time of high-professional journalism which has almost disappeared.
