Summary/Abstract: Security is a great topic for modern political philosophy (as it is for sociology and political psychology); yet it has not been dealt with sufficiently, and only occasionally from a philosophical perspective. Traditional explanations of the causes of conflicts and wars, and thus also of security, under new technological circumstances, are not enough. The political rationality of the European tradition, which subjects war to the rule of politics, disintegrates with the discovery of means for mass destruction. The crisis of political rationality depends on the crisis of its basic category, namely of security. Security has always been disjunctive or exclusive; at present the stress is on the totality of this feature Such kind of security has become an essential agent of insecurity as it has not been adapted to the nuclear era In this epoch the need for the establishment of a political rationality which would he different from the classical one gives rise to the need to give a new sense to the slate and to introduce relevant changes into the political system.
