Summary/Abstract: Within the sociology of mass communication there are two basic preconditions for the determining of the concept of information. These arc the social context, namely the social significance and the social conditioning of the communicated content, and the specific character of the field of information and communication, from this double precondition of information, and starting from its social and class conditioning, the various approaches to a determining of information - the statistical and mathematical, the technological - deterministic, the culturological, and others — can be critically interpreted. In our time an examination of the social character of information that starts from its definition as a specific type of work, places information within its concrete socio-historical context determined by the commodity-monetary form of production.
