Summary/Abstract: The growth of information in the economy should not be confused with the informalization of society. These processes can partly take place independently, e.g. information may be intensely developed in the economy, while society remaine on a pre informational level. Among other things informatization changes the relationship between the individual and knowledge: today an individual person is often in direct contact with the total knowledge of society. Yet in order to be able to make use of that knowledge he must already have a good acquaintance with his area as well as a resourcefulness that will enable him to discover relevant information. Thus new technology does not operate "by itself"; the key factor continues to be man.
