Summary/Abstract: This article is a survey of the public debate organized by the Socialist Alliance of the Working People of Croatia about the problems, results, and perspectives of the transformation of education within the socialist self-management frame. An analysis shows that a public debate has its good and its weak points. The good one is, in the first place, the fact that such an important activity as education has to be discussed in a democratic manner and that a wide ramified debate can lead to relevant position and views about the state of this activity and about its perspectives; the weak one is that a public debate cannot offer a comprehensive and consistent project for the further development of education. In order to reach a solution and to get to an integrative model of education scientific research, thinking, and an elaboration of such a model are required. Here the basic dilemmas and contradictions of the various aspects of the educational system are examined following what was explicitly or implicitly expressed in the debate. This includes such questions as whether education should be linked to work and production or to science and knowledge; whether equal or differentiated education is needed, whether education should be focused on the content of what one learns or on the personality and the process of learning, on whether guaranteed or competitive educational selection and mobility should be practiced, etc. These dilemmas should be scientifically examined and theoretically clarified before the final decision concerning the future model of our educational system is reached. Without being integrated (internally compatible) it cannot function on a principled basis and efficiently, but only partially and in contradictory terms.
