Summary/Abstract: The centre of any debate on whether the legislative and the executive power of Parliament in England constitute surrogates of two royal prerogatives necessarily includes the name of John Locke (1632—1704). The author gives an account of Locke's contribution to the doctrine of the division of power as well as of the contribution of other authors on this subject after Locke up to the appearance of Montesquieu’s views.
