Summary/Abstract: There are five features of the French Revolution that mark its exceptional place in history: (1) Non-institutionalized freedom of political action leads to unconstitutional government and terror. (2) Civil ownership and political liberties are constitutionally and legally inseparable. (3) There are three tested sources of direct sovereignty: God, the people, and the tyrant. (4) Two sources of a civil political order: political power and rational conviction. (5) Neither the legitimization of sovereignty nor the legitimization of the three achievements of the French Revolution (brotherhood, equality, freedom) can be apprehended through social or humanist sciences. The universality of the French Revolution results from its universal separation from earlier forms of historical living.
