Summary/Abstract: This article is a critical synopsis of the academic and essayistic career of Stefan Borbely, an important, although insufficiently discussed and analyzed, contemporary Romanian literary critic. It argues that his unique vision, underlying his most important books, stems from a bifocal attraction to an apparently dichotomous critical vision and from his permanent and fascinating attempt to reconcile them. Namely, one dimension of his critical approach is interested in capturing the essence of the literary phenomenon, while the other is attracted by openness, potentiality, and mystery, seen as residues created by the analytical mind, which can reconfigure the literary space ad infinitum.
