Summary/Abstract: Empirical research of the hopes and fears of older adolescents was carried out in the autumn of 2000 at six faculties of Zagreb University. The examinees were 1st and 2nd year students (N=642) whose average age was 19.3. In an open-type questionnaire the examinees were offered to list in eight open-ended sections their hopes and fears concerning their future in general, careers or areas of self-actualization. The responses were categorized into 18 categories for areas of hope and 14 categories for areas of fear. On average the respondents expressed 5.3 hopes and 3.8 fears. The results of research were compared with findings of similar studies in European and overseas countries. It has been established that Croatian adolescents differ from their peers throughout the world only in the order of priority of hopes or fears giving greater advantage to intrinsic motivation for self actualization, the moral and social aspect of self.
