Summary/Abstract: “The Adoration of the Shepherds” by Rembrandt is a sermon expressed by a paintbrush. It was made in 1646, four years after the death of the artist’s wife. During the eight years of their marriage they had lost three babies, with only the fourth child reaching adulthood. As Rembrandt recalls, “after Saskia’s passing I began to realize: there is no saving power [...] apart from that of the community of truly renewed and converted souls. This is why I started to portray Jesus’ parents, i.e. their threefold unity. The birth-story for me is not a sentimental scene created by Italian artists, but a deep and close togetherness of a few people. This I intended to express by the intimate gloaming, the radiance and dispersion of the inner light [originating from the infant Jesus] as well as by the natural gestures.”
