Summary/Abstract: The observations of Johannes Christiaan Hoekendijk about the diaspora-situation of the church are fully relevant today: the world and the society is changing constantly, and the church witnesses the changing. Several congregations in the country side step by step are loosing their members, and they become diaspora congregation. At the same time, the population of many towns is growing fast; yet even the people there live in a diaspora. The church encounters this diaspora-question in several forms, but it does not pay enough attention to this phenomenon. The reason for this may be the setting of the Volkskirche, which was criticised by Hoekendijk. If the church conducted self-examination and the self-reflection, we could have spared our losses in favour of the neoprotestant churches. Hoekendijk emphasises again and again that the church has to step out of the big and clanging cathedrals and make a shift from cathedral to chapel, because the chapel is the symbol of an era of mobility. It is like a telephone booth, filling the stations of the diaspora people. Hoekendijk formulated specific and practical advises on how to live and grow in a diaspora-situation. His views can be applied in our specific ecclesiastical situation.
