Summary/Abstract: In his paper on “Five milestones of empiricism”, Quine describes “five points where empiricism has taken a turn for the better” since the seventeenth century. Quine sees his own work as the culmination of this process of improvement. The author’s concern in this chapter is with the second milestone, “shift of semantic focus from terms to sentences”. This introduces some of the most important foundational doctrines for contemporary philosophy of language. Examined will be Quine’s approach to issues of what he calls “ontology”, in his classical paper “On what there is”.
