Summary/Abstract: The paper contains a short discussion of historiographical body of work on the subject, both Polish and foreign. It touches upon phenomena observed in private towns in three periods selected by the author. Emphasis is placed on selected issues: legal status, especially the scope of jurisdiction of the municipal judicial system, content of privileges issued for Jews, and their importance for the economy of private towns.
