Summary/Abstract: The goal of this article is to present the patriarchal dominance of men over women in the period of the 1930’s in the American South, through the example of Alice Walker’s heroine Celie in the novel „The Color Purple“, 1982. The patriarchal dominace in the novel is present in all the aspects of Celie’s life, from her childhood, where the dominance was imposed by her step father, to her middle age through her domineering husband’s physical and psychological violence and sexual harassment. Due to the constant humiliations and her imposed subordinate po-sition, Celie’s self- worth and self-appreciation are on the lowest possible level, until she grasps for Shug’s and Sofia’s sisterhood and manages to break free from the male dominance through sisterhood, religion and sexuality.
