The Marks of the Căluş

Summary/Abstract: Among the Romanian dances with ritual functions Căluş dance is the most important. One proof, the custom is or at least was spread all over the territories where there are Romanians. By dance, ritual gestures and acts, dance hollers the performers tell us about their victory over the wicked fairies. They reconstitute that imaginary fight of soldiers armed with clubs, connected as group by oath of allegiance towards Căluş or its substitutes, the Flag and the Beak of Căluş.
