Summary/Abstract: Based on fieldwork in rural Bulgaria, the paper addresses the problem of social security provision in the context of the contemporary ideological regime. The research focus is on family obligations, kinship and social networks as means of improving the social well-being of rural residents. Local meanings, attributes and actions, associated with social security are emphasized, and most notably – the reciprocal relationship between parents and children, investing in property and inheritance. The accentuated topics are intergenerational support, reciprocity and cooperation, the impact of disability and old age.
