Summary/Abstract: The Pedagogical-Theological Institutes in Caransebes and Arad set up in the nineteenth century played a major role in the evolution of book science. At the same time, in 1868, by law no. 68, the Hungarian authorities imposed compulsory school attendance by all citizens of the Austro-Hungarian dualist monarchy. The law provided that all children aged 6 to 12 years should attend primary school.
