Summary/Abstract: Theatre in 17th century France was defined by rules. Rules of society, rules of structure, rules of language, character behaviour and story. It seems odd that in a period of such growth and change, there was also a lot of control placed on creativity. France was not as culturally advanced as other European countries at the beginning of the century because of civil war. Early century influences came from Italy. Italian commedia companies were popular and often toured – Molière himself is heavily influenced by commedia dell'arte.
