Summary/Abstract: In terms of blurring boundaries and defying social and cultural norms, (racial, class, even gender),“passing” stands out as a most interesting phenomenon. While acknowledging the fact that Charles Waddell Chesnutt, James Weldon Johnson, or Jessie Redmon Fauset rank among the most prominent names to have captured it in their novels, the present paper will explore this problematic issue by focusing upon one of the most famous 20th century cases of fictional (de/re)construction of racial identities - Nella Larsen’s Passing.
