Summary/Abstract: The contemporary definition of security and security studies encompasses the following fields: military, politics, society, economics and environment. Despite its significant expansion and deepening, the fields of culture and cultural studies have remained beyond the systemic interest of the security studies and national security policy. Unlike the period of the Cold War when culture was completely ignored in security discussions and practices, in the Post-Cold War context it was given a part within the area of societal security albeit negligible one. Abundance of empirical evidence on the role of culture as one of the decisive factors in drafting and implementing security strategies, iconoclasm and conflicts with the cultural (identity) dimension provides sufficient reason to position culture differently within security activities and include it in security studies. The paper analyzes the relationship between culture and national security and puts forward the arguments in support of the assertion that culture is very much relevant to the national security. There are three general levels of observation: the effect of culture on national security definition and the decision making process in the area of national security (national security culture), culture as a distinct area of national security and culture as a threat target.
