Summary/Abstract: The up-to-date article, in view of taking over the Presidency of the European Union by Romania, provides a picture of the European structure in its essential landmarks. The European Union is presented with a historical view from its creation to the present, in a chronological order, with reference to the states that have joined it and the basic treaties for it enlargement, enumerating the most important community institutions. This presentation highlights the confusion that can be made between the European Union institutions and other regulated institutions at regional level within Europe or at a universal level. Finally, the article refers to the Schengen and the Euro area to which Romania will adhere or join.
