Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the terms of address and the titles in the speeches of the Pope John Paul II to the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See, in Polish and French versions. On the one hand, those speeches are a source of reflection; and, on the other hand, they are an interesting material for linguistic studies. One of the features of the terms of address which aim to conform to the ceremonial aspect of these meetings is the presence of solemn titles that exist in the both languages. In addition to honorary address terms which refer to honourable functions, e.g. Your Excellency or Ambassador, one can find universal titles, e.g. Ladies and Gentlemen, whose semantic value reflects their historical and cultural differences, and, at the same time, the differences in their use.
