Consumption, that object of political desire

Summary/Abstract: This text focuses on the construction of a consumer culture as a political project. It aims at interpreting the uses of ‘consumption’ as a ‘soft’ weapon during the Cold War. The text analyzes one particular case, the construction of consumer citizens in socialist Bulgaria, aiming to present consumption as a field of civil rights and most importantly as a battlefield for negotiating public definitions of ‘common good.’
