Summary/Abstract: Constitutional judiciary plays an important role in contemporary constitutionalorders based on the principles of democracy, the rule of law and the division of powers,regardless of institutional solutions adopted in individual states. Due to the highauthority of these bodies, resulting primarily from their highly qualified composition,constitutional courts not only fulfill their basic function of reviewing theconstitutionality and legality of law, but also receive a number of specific competencesthat go beyond this function. The analysis presented in the article focuses on the roleand the scope of competences of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal with regard to theabstract and concrete constitutional review, as well as other competences not directlyrelated to the review of law.
