Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of illustrations and texts published in the French satirical magazine Le Canard Souvage dedicated to the murder of the Serbian King Alexander Obrenović and his wife, Queen Draga, in a coup that was carried out by the officers-conspirators at the night of May 29 (June 11) 1903. Brutality by which the coup was performed gave the authors in the French magazine a material for satirical comments on “the Balkan nature and customs”, but also for criticizing the necrophilic reaction of most of the European press, including French magazines. Among the authors of the texts were Charles-Louis Philippe, Jules Renard, and Alfred Jarry, who transformed the bloody event in the Serbian court into a “fairytale”. Authors of the illustrations were established artists: František Kupka, Hermann-Paul, Irbie, Felix Vallotton, Alexandre Steinlen, Auguste Roubille. Their works published in Le Canard Souvage are interesting contributions, carried out high graphic level, of the negative imagery of Serbia and the Balkans at the beginning of the 20th century.
