Summary/Abstract: In a traditional approach, the syntactic functions in the Romanian grammar are classified according to both morpho-syntactic and semantic criteria. The uniqueness and multiplicity of the syntactic functions are traditionally viewed as two opposite concepts, with uniqueness applying in subordination and multiplicity applying in coordination. From a more modern point of view, according to which syntactic functions are realized, in most cases, by semantic criteria, uniqueness mostly refers to the syntactic functions of the verbal group. In this article we make a clear distinction between the syntactic functions and the semantic ones and we also suggest a new definition of the uniqueness, based on this distinction.
