Summary/Abstract: In the article are outlined the functions of storytelling in traditional oral culture. The narrative distinguishes things and gives them meaning. With its capacity to generalize and at the same time to engage the imagination and the emotions, it reflects the way people apprehend and experience the world, the way they order it and think about it. The situation of storytelling is a form of communication, when a specific community is created; narration maintains the achieved social order and knowledge about the world; it is a form of education, introducing children in the norms and the way of living; it is a concomitant commentary and a philosophical generalization on the events in everyday life; it has a mediating role and a therapeutic effect. All these make the narrative and the narrative situation a fundamental characteristic of traditional culture which pervades all its spheres: it patterns the worldview, constructs the public opinion and regulates the community relations.
