Summary/Abstract: Higher education institutions evolve by continuously adapting to the demands of the communities they serve and to the exigencies of contemporary society. They develop strategies to maintain their autonomy, place, and social role, hence the increasing presence of digital technologies at the core of these strategies. Digital technologies are no longer optional: they have become mandatory and are present in each and every aspect of academic life: administrative infrastructures, pedagogy and education, research, access to information resources, relationships with other similar institutions at both national and international levels, etc. If we need academic digital development to be feasible, we need to design it so that it includes all components and activities of the institution, so that it approaches digital technologies as a means to support academic missions and not per se, and so that there is permanent concern for ensuring acquiring a culture of information or, at least, proper training in the use of technologies for the entire academic community (teachers, students, researchers, administrative staff).
