Summary/Abstract: Research theories and methods derived from them differ according to societal needs and demands. In this article, the focus lied with theories and methods within Finnish folklore studies. What kind of investigations is conducted within the discipline of our current time? Certainly, there are multiple ways to do research, but today’s referee institution requires some kind of generally prevailing and accepted methods. Inspired by a voyage to Kosovo I regarded the situation within folklore studies by the help of the title of Bengt Holbek’s article “De magtesløses spil” (The game of the unpowered). Consequently my starting point here is that folklore may be regarded an expression of powerlessness (Holbek 1976: 53–787).
