Summary/Abstract: The cultural program of the Astra Association, which included the promoting of the folk heritage, was carried out by means of the reviews being published, either in the form of printed collections of folk literature or lectures delivered on various occasions on that particular topic. Such approaches stimulated and enhanced the idea of the cultural unity of the Romanian people that was faced in the second half of the nineteenth century with most severe historic challenges. Cultural tradition and national identity were focused upon by the Romanian intellectuals of that time, most of the them members of the Astra Association, who stressed the opportunity of folk literature and ethnographic researches. As a result, various critical studies and collections of Romanian folk literature, traditions, and customs were published and are now thoroughly examined in this article.
