Summary/Abstract: Fair trade currently represents the culmination of a trading system in accordance with sustainable development. It comes to production or consumption; the presence and role of women is considerable in this movement. On the one hand, the woman produces and secondly, she consumes. Both positions have been invaluable in changing the situation of women worldwide. Given that, women benefit more in the fair-trade process than in the traditional conventional market. From an empirical work on several cooperatives, and on a 177-consumer database, it can be argued that the producers were able to develop both their situation and that of their families, but also that women consume more fair-trade products than men do. We limited our object of research on two fronts: the abstract formalization, which leans on documentary analysis and the operationalization which bases on both the caseproducing cooperatives and on the particular Spanish consumers to understand their purchase and consumption motivations.
