Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to characterise the contemporary image and function of greenery in urban public space and the process of transformation in this greenery over the past century. The paper also presents contemporary trends in the shaping of urban greenery, trends in line with the process of the urban landscape’s vernacularisation. Examples of sites in European cities back up observations of the role that greenery has in the transformation of the urban landscape and the constitution of new attitudes among residents. The methods used include literature studies, case studies of contemporary grassroots initiatives (including free-form in-terviews and unstructured conversations with inhabitants), inventory of vegetation, and for-mal analyses of current trends in the designing of urban greenery at European gardening exhi-bitions and new urban green spaces. The examples investigated prove that users prefer garden-like spaces as well as open and undeveloped areas, featuring natural, non-landscaped spaces. Contemporary urban green spaces have numerous new functions, reaching beyond decoration and nature. They also constitute a tool furthering the integration of local communities, condu-cive to the active involvement of local residents in their development, where mechanisms of participatory democracy are applied.
