Summary/Abstract: Rarely performed and little-known opera by Claudio Monteverdi The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland is considered in relation to the composer’s entire output, but also the beginnings of the development of Baroque opera and the operatic genre in general. Starting from the aspects of the libretto by Giacomo Badoaro, based on the last chapters of Homer’s Odyssey, the relations with the literary pretext are examined, whilst also discussing the musical language and the operatic elements that adorn this work. The referenced secondary literature was used for basic information about this work, while all conclusions were reached on the basis of the score that was consulted in every element of the text. One act of the opera was singled out in order to showcase the elements of this piece, drama and characters in its dramatic and music streams and draw conclusions about the distinguished and convincing characters of two protagonists, Odyssey (Ulysses) and Penelope. These features demonstrate the basic postulates of opera art whose genesis can be traced from the previous and first Monteverdi’s opera Orpheus to his final masterpiece The Coronation of Popaeaa (L’incoronazione di Poppea). The basic elements of Monteverdi’s musical language are analyzed on the basis of selected numbers that represent the seeds of future arias, ariosos, ensembles, orchestral parts. Also, the historical context of the 17th century in terms of artistic, social and social movements is also considered; the stylistic characteristics of the early Baroque are discussed and, seen from the perspective of other arts, the specific relations of internal and external factors that participated in establishing the newly-emerging operatic art are being considered. An analysis of Monteverdi’s operatic handwriting in the opera The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland, representing a bridge between other works. The interpreter, examines his role in material, creative sense as a significant stage that gradually contributes to the opera style.
