Summary/Abstract: The article, based on the analysis of social documents as the main research method, aims to study the development and transformation of sentences and penal policies in our country, during the Contemporary period. The undertaken study involves a research from two perspectives, a historical one that reflects the types of punishment and methods of their application, specific to each period and a judicial one that highlights the main normative acts which substantiated throughout time the criminal policies of Romania. The article will mainly mark the changes stipulated by the Criminal Codes and laws of execution of sentences.
